DBA aims to listen and understand the perspectives of Deafblind community members. The DBA reference group guides our work and advocacy. This bundle of resources explains how and why DBA values a reference group.
What is a reference group?
A reference group is a group of people with expert knowledge who share their experiences and knowledge about certain topics.
They answer questions, give advice and information. This is not a workshop or training.
Deafblind are the experts who share their perspectives.
DBA History with Reference Groups
From 2020-2024, DBA’s reference group had over 25 diverse deafblind members. This group shared about the Deafblind community across Australia.
Members had different ages, genders, cultural identities, language use p and types of deafblindness. DBA are seeking new members for a group that goes from November 2024-June 2025.

Why was this group important?
In 2020, DBA’s National Information Project created their first reference group. Members in the group represented the diversity of the Deafblind community. This is a summary of who was in the group and the incredible work they guided.
Members:
– Had different backgrounds, cultures, types of deafblindness, communication preferences and locations Provided advice and feedback about what is happening across Australia.
– Were paid for their time and expertise.
Timing:
This group started during COVID lockdown in 2020. The group members had to learn to work with new technology and meet in online groups. Most members had never done this before and it’s not Deafblind friendly. This required patience, determination, and lots of practice. Even though it was challenging, the group kept going.
From 2020-2023:
– We provided over 30 online trainings.
In 2023 and 2024 we finally met in person for:
– 12 live workshops in-person reference group sessions
– Reference group meetings
– Recording video resources
Members identified topics about deafblindness:
– Safety
– Self-Advocacy
– Technology
– Deafblind Awareness
– Communication
– Mental Health
Train the Trainer
Four Members joined a Train the Trainer program to become trainers for DBA. Two of those members were later employed by DBA to work for NIP.
Trainings and workshops
Deafblind presenters provided training to:
– NDIA, local government, interpreters and CommGuides, Allied health, (OT, O&M, Social workers, etc), mental and physical health providers, community, and disability services.
Thank you to everyone in this reference group.
