Deafblind Australia and our project partner Deafblind Western Australia are pleased to announce the start of our new project ‘How to be Seen and Heard’ or ‘Seen and Heard’ for short. Deafblind Australia welcome our new Project Manager, Lauren Croiset, who will be overseeing all aspects of the project.

Seen and Heard is a project that will provide training to people who are deafblind so that they can develop skills and confidence to use digital technology better.

This project aims to provide special training to deafblind people to learn how to access the digital world for communication, knowledge, self-expression and to connect within your own deafblind community, the disability community and mainstream society. After COVID-19 restrictions stopped us from physically being together, this project will help the deafblind community to continue to connect online, should they not be able to physically see people again.

The main areas of focus are:

  • Using email (eg. Outlook, Gmail)
  • Using social media to connect to others (eg. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat)
  • Video conferencing (eg. Zoom, Skype, MS Teams)
  • How to find information via a search engine (eg. Google)
  • How to navigate websites
  • How to navigate your NDIS My Portal
  • How to access the National Relay Service
  • Digital communication etiquette
  • Giving you answers to your online problems and issues

There will be workshops, groups sessions and one on one sessions set up by each project officer in each State from August 2021. The program will continue into 2022.

At present, Deafblind Australia is now employing project officers across NSW, QLD, SA and NT. We are looking for people with Deafblindness, or who have an excellent understanding of deafblindess to fill these positions. If you are someone or know someone who would be great as a Project Officer, please contact Lauren Croiset by email lauren.croiset@deafblindaustralia.org.au

This project will also work closely with the Deafblind community over the next few months to create workshops that are what you want and need. Seen and Heard wants to see you and hear you – tell us what you want and need to learn online by speaking with your dedicated Project Officer or emailing lauren.croiset@deafblindaustralia.org.au
